On the Road by Jack Kerouac
On the Road by Jack Kerouac is a true story about Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady's road trip around America in the 1950's during the beat movement. They were traveling day by day, with their final destination being San Francisco, but not really knowing where they would end up on the way. The adventure was made in many different ways, by school bus, by hitch-hiking, and catching rides with people they might know along the way. They had very little money and mainly bought just food and cigarettes along the way. There was lots on wild moments that happened just out of the blue. Neal Cassady is described as a real character. He goes on long rants, and makes all of these plans about everything while Jack is more of the quiet observer. Jack, Neal and the rest of the people they made the trip with were all very opposing of the lifestyle in the 50's. Usually in the 50's, men had jobs and lived in the suburbs with their families. Jack and Neal decided to live for the moment and go on the road with little to no stability of what they were doing. They also listened to different types of new music, and the whole overall Beats culture was completely opposing of normal 1950's lifestyle. This is what makes Jack and Neal such individuals.
